IT'S TEA TIME!!

There’s nothing like a nice warm cup of soothing tea to help you fall back and unwind. Or maybe tea as a warm pick-me-up in the morning. Either way you like it, I’m sure that many of you are aware of how drinking teas can aid in the ongoing battle of the bulge and increase the body's immunity to colds and flu. This information is not new. However, did you all know that January is National Hot Tea Month?! Wow! I wonder how many years this has been in effect cause I most certainly have been unaware of it.

Anyhoo, this fact caught my attention not only because I have an over-flowing shelf full of teas but because of the frickin’ cold temps we’ve been having. I’ve talked w/a number of people who’ve been blasting there heaters and are still freezin’. Myself included. I figure this to be the perfect time to really indulge in my teas and help me to warm up.

But get this… I had no idea that there’s a certain way you should blend your teas. Uh huh. That’s another thing that I’ve learned.

Here are some tips from master tea blender, Dave DeCandia of The Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf, a family-run specialty company selling coffee beans, rare teas, and accessories.

• Water temperature: Never use boiling water to make tea. Boiling water will only burn the tea leaves and diminish the flavor. The ideal temperature is between 185 and 190 degrees. If you’ve let the kettle start to boil let the water sit for 30 seconds so the water cools slightly.

• Amount of tea: Use one tea bag per 1-2 cups of water or for loose tea use one teaspoon of tea leaves for every cup. Never reuse a tea bag – the flavor will have been used in the first cup.

• Steeping: Exactly how long you should steep your tea depends on the type of tea; however, most teas begin tasting bitter after seven minutes of steeping. Steep green tea for about three minutes, oolong and black teas for about five minutes and herbal teas for about seven minutes. Remove the tea bag immediately after use to avoid burning the leaves – this will make the tea taste bitter. Remember that tea bags take less time to brew than loose tea leaves.

• Strength: Some people like strong tea. My motto for strong tea is, “Add more tea, not time.” Steeping the tea for more time will only reduce the flavor, not increase the strength.

• Additions: When adding both lemon and sugar, add the sugar first. If the lemon is added first the citric acid will prevent the sugar from dissolving. I wonder if this applies to natural sugar substitutes like stevia, agave nectar or honey. Hmmm?.. Cream should not be added to tea as it interferes with the taste but personal preferences varies.

Cheers , my dears!

A GREAT HOLIDAY GIFT FOR NATURALS

I know some of you may be wondering what can I get for my sis, cousin, friend or loved-one who is thinking about going natural, transitioning, new to natural hair. Well, as I've stated before, this is one of the best books to invest in. Even for us who have been natural for a few years. This would certainly make a great gift that all naturals would appreciate.

FULL STEAM AHEAD......

Hola Chicas (& Chicos)

So here it is. My post on my hair steamer thus far. Am I enjoying it? Hell yes! Have I fallen in love with it? Hmm...maybe more of an obsession. And only because I’m still learning how to use it with the products I have. So far, I have steam conditioned my hair 4 times. It’s so tempting. I want to steam more often but I also want to keep from manipulating my hair too often so that I won't hinder any growth. But doggonit, it (the steamer) keeps calling me. ..Keeps..calling me.

Uhhhh *side eyes*. Let me share with you what I’ve done and experienced so far.

1st Steam Treatment
Applied Jessicurl WDT & Aubrey Organics Honeysuckle Rose Condish with some Aubrey Organics GPB condish on my ends. Twisted with Jane Carter Twist and Lock.

Result: My hair was quite manageable. More so than usual. Happy happy. Joy joy.

2nd Steam Treatment
Did a pre-poo treatment with Hairveda Vatika Frosting (Ooh, that stuffs smells so good. Like frosting.Ummm) Co-washed with Herbal Essences Totally Twisted. Steamed with Hairveda SitricNillah Deep Conditioning Masque. Twisted with JC Twist and Lock.

Result: Hair was still very manageable and soft. Denman brush glided thru hair like a knife thru warm buttah. =)

3rd Steam Treatment
Hennaed 30 minutes under the steamer. (Please note: I lack in the patience department and was so hyped that I immediately rinsed the henna out. Big no-no.)Then deep conditioned under the steamer with Aubrey Organics Honeysuckle Rose conditioner & Jessicurl WDT. Twisted up with JC Twist and Lock.

Result: Hair was not as manageable as I expected but after talking w/Tina over at Elan Tresses (Who btw has named her steamer. Really.) I will handle this differently next time.

4th Treatment

Re-twisted hair with JC Hair Nourishing Cream. Topped with JC Nourish and Shine. Steamed for 20 minutes. Afterwards, plastic capped my hair for about an hour or so. Smoothed with a little oil and wrapped my hair for the night.

Result: Awoke to soft , well moisturized tresses.

I’ve read that around the 5th or 6th steam treatment is when you really notice a change. I will keep you lovelies posted on that. Okay? Cool.

JUICING {RELOADED}

Freshly juiced vegetables (also referred to as fresh green drinks containing ingredients such as cucumber, celery, spinach, lettuce, sprouts, kale, pak choi, broccoli, cabbage, parsley etc.) give your body an instant boost of nutrients, enzymes, vitamins and minerals in a form that the body can easily assimilate, absorb and digest – in fact, studies have shown that the nutrients from juiced vegetables are within our bloodstream within 30 minutes of consumption!

At the most basic level, juicing allows us to add so many more vegetables to our daily diet, and to up the amount of raw food we consume giving the body energy and boosting the immune system and the body’s cleansing process.

A quick summary of why juicing is so beneficial:
- Green juices contain lots of chlorophyll which is incredibly effective in detoxifying our bodies. Chlorophyll can help make our bodies strong, detoxify the liver, can purify and help to rebuild our blood cells (as the molecular structure is very similar to haemoglobin which moves oxygen through our blood), remove mold, parasites and myco/exotoxins from the body and (as many, many studies show) can help prevent and remove cancer cells.

- According to macrobiotic.co.uk – one of the biggest health benefits of juicing can be summarised in one phrase: cellular cleansing. According to Steve Meyerowitz (the Sprout Man!) all changes to a persons health should start at a cellular level by oxygenating and cleansing the system of toxins and other damaging foreign invaders. This is known as creating and enhancing health and fitness from the inside out. The cellular environment is the environment where all of the cells in our body live, including the lymphatic system, digestive system, and cardiovascular system. This could be a whole article in itself, however, it is important to remember that fresh vegetable juices are massively beneficial to the body’s efforts to cleanse its cellular environment.

- Raw, fresh vegetable juices are extremely alkaline. We have several other articles on the importance of alkalising your body, however, very briefly – it is highly beneficial to ensure that your body does not become over-acidic and that an alkaline balance is maintained in the blood & tissues. Over acidification is the common theme and cause of almost all conditions of ill health!

- As mentioned, raw vegetable juices/ green drinks are an excellent source of vitamins & minerals, trace elements, enzymes and nutrients which supply essential elements required for the body’s healing processes and cell regeneration.

- Vegetable juices are rich in natural medicines, vegetal hormones & antibiotics. For instance, certain hormones needed by the pancreas to produce insulin are present in cucumber & onion juices and freshly juiced garlic, onions, radish & tomatoes contain many beneficial antibiotic substances.

- Easily absorbed organic minerals such as calcium, potassium & silicon are contained within fresh vegetable juice. These minerals assist the body in restoring the biochemical & mineral balance in the tissues & cells, which helps to prevent the premature aging of cells & disease.

Just wanted to share a couple of the juices that I've made in my juicer. I really enjoy them.

The Acidity Buster by Sandra Cabot

1/2 grapefruit, peeled
1 lemon
2 stalks of celery, leaves removed
1 cucumber
1 red radish
2 inch slice of pineapple
1/2 inch ginger root

The Oxygenator by Natalia Rose

1 lb of carrots
1 medium beet
1 Tablespoon fresh ginger
1/4 tsp fresh Serrano chili

For my juices, I stick with organic foods. Also, the juicer that I have is the Breville Juice Fountain Plus. And yes, I enjoy this juicer! I hope to purchase a Greenstar juicer one day, so that I can juice leafy greens really well.

$124.95 IF YOU PLEASE....

Hi Beautifuls!

I was so side-tracked w/the delivery of the current Barbie Collector catalog (Yes, I receive them. Lol.) that my intended post will be done later. Granted my days of playing with Barbie dolls have long since gone, I still love to admire the details and the high fashion of the Collector Editions. Goodness! Wish I could have a collection of my own. And of course, the fact that these dolls are beautiful creations that look like me, well.. sort of but you know what I mean (which is still not that common a sight) makes me want them even more. The designer of all of the dolls shown here is Mr. Byron Lars.

Let's take a looksie at a few of my favorites....

"Sugar"

"Pepper"

"Tatu" from the Treasures of Africa collection

"Nne" from the Treasures of Africa collection

And "Ayako Jones" is this fierce barbie at the top. Iwanther! Iwanther! Iwanther!

So $124.95 if you please. I'll take cash, check or money order. Or you could just send me the doll.

Lol.

MY UPDATED REGIMEN (FALL/WINTER)

Hola Gorgeous Ones!

Hope that all is well with you. I decided to post my updated regimen because of a few inquiries I've gotten. Also, because I'm pooped and waited really late to get my post together.

And before I go any further, here is my disclaimer:
I am not nor do I claim to be a professional and licensed hair stylist, only a learning professional on the needs of my particular hair. The products that I list and how I use them are quoted based upon my hair's response to them. I am by know means soliciting these products as a means of profit or professional insight, but solely based upon my hair's wonderful experience with them. (Basic PJ.) So in other words, I tried it and it worked. I am truly only speaking on my personal experience. I recommend and hope that you do the same thing with products even if our hair may look the exact same because EVERY head of hair is different and reacts differently to the same and/or different products. ?Capiche?...Sincerely, ChocolateOrchid. :D

MY REGIMEN (cold weather)
Co-wash once a week followed by deep conditioning. After washing some of the deep conditioner out, my final rinse is a tea rinse w/acv. While hair is still soaking wet, I apply a moisturizer of choice. Then wrap my hair in a Curlease towel (you can use a microfiber towel or old t-shirt) for no longer than 15 minutes. Just enough to get some drippies.

If I’m twisting my hair, I break out Miss Jessie’s Meringue and twist my hair up.

If I’m bunning, I use Jane Carter’s Nourish & Shine, Qhemet’s Burdock Root Buttercreme and/or Qhemet’s Amla Pomade.

I always seal my ends w/oil. I usually do an 1 to 1 1/2 an inch of my ends.
**Probably will be doing a lot of protective styling (bunning/twists/twist-outs. Considering a sew-in weave)**

My Fav products that work for me:
*this is a current list of those I mostly use.*

Cleansers- (not often, maybe once a month)
Devacurl NoPoo (great no-poo shampoo)
Qhemet shampoo bar ( don’t think she makes this anymore)
Hair Rules Aloe Grapefruit Purifying shampoo (have tried and liked)
** If necessary, you can also dilute the shampoo w/water so that it isn’t harsh on your hair. Maybe 1 pt shampoo to 2 pts water. I suggest playing w/different ratios to see what works for your hair.**

Condish- (co-wash 1 to 2 times/wk depending on how hair is styled and season)
Herbal Essences Totally Twisted (Heavenly. good as leave-in also)
V05 Moisture Milks Condish (I use this one to wash out henna and ayurvedic powders)

Deep Condish- (usually do weekly)
Hairveda SitricNillah Deep Conditioning Masque (lovin’ this one)
Jessicurl Weekly Deep Conditioning Treatment (good as leave-in also)
Aubrey Organics Honeysuckle Rose (usually combine w/jessicurl wdt)
Curl Junkie Hisbiscus & Banana Deep Fix Moisturizing Condish
**about to try Aubrey Organics GPB Condish (has protein in it which I believe my hair needs) Will post about it after I try it.**

Leave-Ins/Detanglers
* I can use these alone during the warmer seasons*
Oyin’s Handmade Honey Hemp Condish
MOP Leave-In Condish
*Can’t say enough about these. I especially use these under Miss Jessie’s products.*

Moisturizers- (whenever necessary which means often)
Qhemet burdock root buttercreme
Curl Junkie Hisbiscus & Banana Honey Butta Leave-In (haven’t used much. Will revisit once it in Spring/Summer)
Jane Carter Nourish & Shine (Can be used on scalp/alone/or to seal. Makes my hair feel soooooo good.)
**can use these alone during warmer months**

Miss Jessie’s Curly Meringue
Miss Jessie’s Stretch Silkening Crème

Gels-
IC Hair Polisher w/sparkelites (use when doing ponytails, puffs & buns only in warmer weather)
Curl Junkie Curl Assurance Aloe Fix gel (loves this stuff. Great for moisture also)
*I doubt I will use these again until the weather warms up here*

Qhemet Burdock Root buttercreme
Jojoba/Grapeseed/Almond oil or a mix
Coconut Oil (mainly during warm weather)
Shealoe (mixture of unrefined shea butter, aloe vera gel, & a few oils)
Jamaican Black Castor Oil (trying it out cause I’ve heard only good things about it even though Castor oil is too heavy for my hair. Funny me.)
Komaza Care Hair Nourishment Oil (great scalp/growth oil. Would not seal w/this. Use on scalp only)
Carol’s Daughter Hair Elixer (currently using on scalp. Would not seal w/this. Use on scalp only)

BREATHE, RELAX AND GO WITH THE FLOW

STRESS
Physiology. a specific response by the body to a stimulus, as fear or pain, that disturbs or interferes with the normal physiological equilibrium of an organism.
8. physical, mental, or emotional strain or tension: Worry over his job and his wife's health put him under a great stress.
9. a situation, occurrence, or factor causing this: The stress of being trapped in the elevator gave him a pounding headache.

This is what I was feeling last week. I’m a creature of habit and love comfort in organization, or at least what I deem as organization. The only thing is life does not always go according to plan, or at least the plan you may have for it. Even in already knowing these things I sometimes have to remind myself to take time to breath, relax and go with the flow. What can I say?... I’m a work in progress.

What really tipped me off that I was feeling a bit anxious was my breathing. I noticed that I wasn’t breathing fully. So I made up in my mind to remedy that w/a yoga class. It had been so long since I’d been to one. You can read my past posts on yoga here and here.

I had to make the choice to commit myself (recommit) to something that would benefit me and my well-being and, in the mean time, not beat myself up for slacking.

ICE CREAM.......OR IS IT?

Okay, I know that the weather is turning (or has turned depending on your location) cooler but sometimes I just want me some. Ice cream, that is. And seeing as I am so into eating as healthy as I possibly can, I found a recipe for something that will definitely satisfy your sweets craving.

Can you guess what this is....
It’s actually frozen bananas, creamed in a food processor (using the S blade). I got this recipe from ChoosingRaw blog (great raw foods blog). She (Gena from ChoosingRaw) calls this dish "Banana Soft Serve". I could not believe that something this simple could be so good. So of course, I had to put this recipe to the test.

Here’s the recipe :
3 frozen organic bananas
Cinnamon (optional)
Chocolate Sauce (optional)

I took 3 frozen bananas and popped them into the food processor. Pulsed them for about 5 minutes, during which I would stop it and scrap the bananas off the sides to make sure everything was creamed.

In the meantime for the chocolate sauce, I used 1 Tablespoon of raw cacao (raw chocolate) to 2 T of Agave nectar and blended until smooth. And just to make things a little funky, I shook a little bit of Cinnamon on top. Ummmmmm…. So delicious.

I was especially happy when my daughter tried it and loved it. So tryin, to get that girl to eat more raw so I took this as a victory and beginning for her. ( I do believe she’s opening up to it more.) She even requests this. Lol.
It really is a simple win-win recipe. If you try it, let me know what you think.

THANK GOD I'M NATURAL REVIEW

I can remember more than 2 yrs ago deciding that I was finally going to go “natural”. I had spent soooooo many years wanting to. Secretly envying (and admiring) other woman who had gone thru with their decision before me. I distinctly remember finally getting the um….gonads to go for it and doing it. I also vividly remember not knowing what the hell to do after I got it done. I was clueless. So I bought a book by a well known hair stylist regarding natural hair. I was really happy with my purchase until I got home - disappointed by its content. It really didn’t help me as I expected it would. Now looking back, I realize that it was not necessarily a book for the newbie. However, “Thank God I’m Natural: The Ultimate Guide to Caring for and Maintaining Natural Hair” by Chris-Tia E. Donaldson is that book and so much more.

When Chris-Tia contacted me about reading and reviewing her book, I honestly thought, “Oh God. Not another hair book.” But after visiting her site I was convinced that I should give it a try. After reading and thoroughly enjoying this book, I regard “Thank God I’m Natural” as an encyclopedia, maybe even bible for natural hair newbies, for those considering going natural, those transitioning, and even for those who have been natural for awhile. This is a book that should definitely be in your library.

I loved the fact that Chris-Tia shares her personal journey to natural hair. That really made me feel connected. This is definitely a book written by someone who knows the experience- ups and downs, very well. Which in turn, makes it easily readable, enjoyable, understandable and relatable.

I can’t say that there was any favorite point of the book for me because I appreciated it in its entirety. So here are some of the particulars that I enjoyed.
Chapter on “A Brush With History” – A must read is all I can say.

Chapter on “Color Me Natural” – Great information seeing as I’ve been strongly considering getting my coils & curls colored. I appreciate the honesty of the personal experience in which it was written.

Chapter on “The Perfect Blow Out” – After reading this chapter, I think I just may have the nerve to swing this on my own.

Chapter on “Making Products at Home”- Okay, I am so into this right now. There are some great, simple recipes in this chapter. Now I have a more reasons to get in the kitchen.

Overall this is an awesome reference book that all naturals can benefit from. There’s even a natural hair glossary in the back. Also, those with beautiful locks have a chapter dedicated to them!

Bottom line: If you’re thinking about going natural, transitioning or if you’re already natural (newbie, old-head or somewhere in between), you should have this book in your library. It’s totally relatable and has a wealth of useful and practical information in it that is written with genuine perspective and intent. This would also make a great gift!

You can purchase "Thank God I'm Natural: The Ultimate Guide to Caring for and Maintaining Natural Hair" on Amazon here.
Or visit Thank God I'm Natural for the website and entrance to Chris-Tia's blog.

To the author:
Thank you Chris-Tia for sending me a copy of your book and allowing me to do this review. I am honored and grateful that you considered me and my blog for this. I thoroughly enjoyed reading “Thank God I’m Natural” and consider it an asset in my personal library. I wish you great success!!

IT'S TEA TIME!

Hola Beautifuls!

Remember my post on herbs. I ended up trying an herbal rinse out on last week. Too impatient to wait on my Mountain Rose order I went ahead and worked w/what I had on hand and picked up some loose herbs from a health store. It went pretty well. I just wished that I had had all of the herbs that I intended to use. What I used in this particular tea was Marshmallow Root, Burdock Root and Horsetail. I basically followed the method in that Trenellm used in her video that I included in my previous post.

FIRST HAIR TEA RECIPE

1 T of Marshmallow Root – gives awesome slip; detangler. It provides excellent relief from skin and scalp irritation while leaving hair soft and shining.

1 T Burdock Root – manageability, conditioning, improve hair strength, shine, body, and to help reverse scalp conditions, such as dandruff and to combat hair loss. It contains nutrients required to maintain a healthy scalp and promote natural hair growth.

1 T horsetail - Heavy in silica; strengthens fingernails and hair, especially good for split ends. It contributes flexibility and strength to the bones, hair, and nails.

I steeped the herbs in about 20 oz of distilled water. I let them steep for about 2 hours. I’ve read that the longer you allow the tea to steep, the better the herbs will infuse. With that in mind, I’ll allow a longer amount of steeping the next time I do an herbal rinse. I poured a small amount of Apple Cider Vinegar into a 16 oz plastic bottle.

**side note**
Hair is on the mildly acidic side of the pH scale and has an ideal pH of 4.5 to 5.5, which is close to that of an apple cider vinegar rinse (pH 2.9).

On the other hand, many of the hair care products we use, such as soap-based shampoos, bleaches, hair colors, and permanents are strongly alkaline.

Rinsing with apple cider vinegar will help balance the pH of your hair and remove the buildup that can result from the use of these styling products and inexpensive shampoos.

Rinsing will also close the numerous cuticle scales which cover and protect the surface of each hair shaft. This imparts a smoother surface which reflects more light and as a result leaves your hair shinier, smoother and easier to manage.

After reading a little more on this, I believe that I can up that amount to 1/3 of the mixture. Based on that, I’ll also increase this for my next batch. (I doubt it will be 1/3 but it'll definitely be more than I used last time. I'm always concerned about drying my hair out so I'll gradually increase the ACV amount and be watchful of how my hair responds.) I poured my tea mixture on top of the ACV. Then I added a few drops of my favorite essential oils- Lemongrass and Lavender. Oh, that was a heavenly scent that actually lingered longer than I expected. I also added a few drops of Vitamin E oil.

Shook all these ingredients up and used it as a final rinse. Final rinse meaning I did not rinse it out. I liked the way my hair felt and can’t wait to do this with my other herbs. This can be done on all types of hair, including chemically treated.

This was really easy to do so it is definitely a permanent part of my regimen. I hope that after some repeated uses, I’ll be able to share with you more info about my hair and it’s health.

I so still love to play in & with my hair.

By the way, I used the perfect tea maker by Teavana to steep my tea. Loves this product. It makes the process so easy...and fun.

Product Description
The Teavana Perfect Teamaker creates the perfect cup of tea for tea lovers on the go. Just add loose tea, 32oz of hot water and steep. Drain the tea by placing it onto your favorite mug. Prepares four 8oz cups of tea. Dishwasher safe.

I cannot fathom why I didn’t take photos, but will be sure to take some next time.

Also, be sure to check out BreaKINK New Ground. She has some really great to the point information. I'm a little jealous of her herbal hair oil that she's infusing. Lol. Can't wait to give that a try, also. She's also doing a really nice giveaway so check her out.

Peace out, Lovelies...

JUST JUICE

Many people are enjoying the health benefits of consuming raw juices. These powerful elixirs have the ability to strengthen and heal weak cells, increase your oxygen levels, and electron activity through their enzymes, and importantly, saturate your body with needed nutrients. When people are ill, they sometimes have difficulty digesting food. Juice is typically a food that anyone can digest no matter how impaired their anatomy is. Keep in mind that disease states are not the only areas helped by consuming raw juice. Athletes and people who aren't ill use these powerful liquids to prevent free radical damage through the wide spectrum of antioxidants that they provide.

Speaking of which, I have been juicing it up with my Breville Juice Fountain. My current fav juice is a Watermelon/Lemon juice. Very easy and delicious. Tastes like punch.

There are many healthy benefits that you get from watermelons and lemons. The following is a listing of these:

Benefits of Lemon:
1. Lemon act as blood purifier and improves the body’s ability to get rid of toxins.

2. Lemon fruit is excellent in fighting disease that's related to infection.

3. Buy lemon to get rid of certain insects. It’s mother nature’s version of insecticides and will help to repel mosquitoes and flies

4. Some people love antiseptics and would apply it to their skin whenever they have the smallest cut. The good news is you can use lemon on cuts too since it's nature's antiseptics. Not only that, because of its styptics property, it is said that lemon could be applied on cuts to stop bleeding.

5. Drinking lemon juice is useful for people with heart problem - because of its high potassium content

The use of Lemon:
1. Drink fresh lemon juice to cleanse your system

2. Use pure lemon juice on wasp and bee stings to relieve pain

3. Lemon juice mixed with olive oil may help to dissolve gallstones

4. It is believed that regular intake of fresh lemons may be useful in treating cases of kidney stones

And the list goes on for watermelon so I'll try to make this as to the point as possible...

Benefits of Watermelon - Watermelon Nutrients
Watermelon is 92% water, 8% sugar, and high in electrolytes (sodium, potassium, and magnesium), making it a wonderful "energy drink" to hydrate the body.

Watermelon is a good source of vitamin A and beta carotene. Eating watermelon is actually better for your eyes than eating carrots in preventing age-related vision loss (such as macular degeneration and cataracts).

Other watermelon nutrients include vitamin C, thiamin, vitamin B6, and vitamin B1.

Benefits of Watermelon Nutrients - Antioxidants
Besides including the antioxidants vitamin C, vitamin A, and beta carotene, research has recently discovered watermelon is rich in lycopene (a phytochemical). On average, watermelons have about 40% more lycopene than raw tomatoes.
Antioxidants protect cells against free radicals (damaging molecules that play a role in cancer, heart disease, and other diseases). Lycopene is said to be particularly effective in preventing prostate cancer.

Benefits of Watermelon Nutrients - Citrulline
Watermelon is high in citrulline, a non-essential amino acid our bodies use to make arginine, an essential amino acid. Benefits of these amino acids include:
• removing ammonia from the body
• lowering blood pressure
• promoting energy
• strengthening the immune system
• stimulating the pancreas to release insulin
• maintaining acid base balance.

*According to scientists at the Texas A&M's Fruit and Vegetable Improvement Center, citrulline found in watermelon acts similar to sildenafil citrate (better known as Viagra).

You may be wondering what is that stuff at the top of CO's watermelon-lemon juice. Well, I decided to add some Chia seeds to it. Remember my Chia seed post. I just soaked about 1.5 Tablespoons of Chia seeds in distilled water for 30 minutes. After I juiced the melon and lemon, I added the seeds to it.

Oh, here's the recipe which I mostly wing.

WATERMELON PUNCH
1/4 to 1/2 of a small watermelon
1 lemon
I simply juice it, drink and enjoy.

Also, here's a list of issues and some juices that you can drink to address them.

HERBS, HERBS & MORE HERBS

Hi Beautifuls!

Over the past couple of months, my interest in using herbs (common and ayurvedic), not just for health but for my hair, has grown exponentially. I've read a few posts and articles about people using them successfully in hair tea rinses. Tea rinses meaning, brewing herbs as a tea and then rinsing your hair with that very same tea.

Below is a video of an easy-to-do tea rinse done by Trenellm on Youtube. She's really funny.

You can subscribe to Trenellm on Youtube here.

Here's a short list of some herbs and their benefits to your hair.

burdock root - helps prevent hair loss, nourishing
coltsfoot - encourages hair growth
fenugreek - conditioning, medicating, rich in protein, treatment for falling/split hair, growth, silky
nettle - conditions/stimulates scalp
peppermint - stimulates scalp, cooling
rosehips - conditioning, moisturizing
rosemary - encourages hair growth, adds shine

You can also find a list of some herbs, their benefits and ways to use them from hair mixtress, Anita Grant.

I've tried a tea rinse with Marshmallow Root (has great slip to it) and Hisbiscus together. It made for a wonderful detangler.

Aside from using herbs as hair rinses, you can also drink herbs in a tea for many health benefits but do note that if pregnant, use caution and consult with a specialist before doing so to insure you and your unborn childs safety. Ingrid from RawEpicurean has some great posts/recipes for some common herbs that we use for our hair. Click on the names of these herbs to read her informative posts (and recipes) for hisbiscus, nettle and aloe.

Do you use herbs and if so, which ones and how have they worked for you?....

IT'S FRIDAY FUNNIES!!

Happy Friday to all of you fabulous people!!

I trust that you plan on making this one of your best days! ;)
I just had to share with you a Friday funny video. Let me just go on and tell you that I love me some B. Scott. I first found out about him through fab chica, Urbancurlz (who I hope to see at the Atlanta Natural Hair meetup that Lexiwiththecurls is heading up. Hint. Hint.).

Anyhoo, I have mad love for anyone who feels totally comfortable and free to be who they are. That's a rarity and a struggle for many folks. Although I've come a long way, I must admit that I still have my moments. For me, B. represents total self-acceptance and self-love. I think that those are two underrated commodities amongst people.

Well...I'm gonna stop typing and let you all enjoy his video...
"BUTT NAKED NOTHING BUT PEARLS"

Have a wonderful weekend! And as always, "Do You".
Luv Ya,
CO

OH, ROSEMARY!

Hi Beautifuls!

I may or may not have mentioned this before but I am endeavoring to have my own organic garden. The appeal of being able to pick fresh, healthy food with my own hands in my own back yard is really strong for me. Maybe it's just the healthnut in me but it is a dream of mine to have a nice garden in the backyard of my eco-friendly, fashionable chic yet cozy small home. **sighs...One day ;)**

Anyhoo, I've started my garden with a rosemary plant
See this pic of my baby.

Isn't she beautiful! I plan on extending my herbal family this weekend with a couple of more plants. Maybe basil, mint and parsley.
I absolutely love the smell (and taste) of rosemary. For me, it's such a warm, comforting scent.

Here's a little info about Rosemary, my sweet.

Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis [Latin]), also known as rosemarine, has a long tradition of culinary and medicinal use. Today, rosemary is still a popular herb for seasoning, and modern herbalists recommend it for treatment of depression, indigestion, headache, muscle aches, and bad breath.

Rosemary contains powerful antioxidants. In the days before refrigeration, meat was sometimes wrapped in rosemary leaves for flavoring as well as to keep it from going rancid. The antioxidants in rosemary may also offer some level of cancer protection. In one laboratory study, animals that were exposed to toxic chemicals but consumed rosemary developed cancer less frequently than those that did not.

Rosemary has been shown to help kill bacteria that cause infection, which supports its traditional use as an antiseptic treatment for wounds. In France during World War II nurses burned rosemary leaves together with juniper berries to keep the hospital germ-free, which is why the French sometimes refer to it as incensier. The scent of rosemary is also thought to help relieve congestion caused by allergies and respiratory infections.

Like two other culinary herbs, sage and thyme, rosemary contains phytochemicals that help guard against the depletion of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter that is crucial to proper brain function. Rosemary also protects the brain from oxidation and increases blood flow, two actions that may help prevent or slow the development of Alzheimer's. Better yet, the phytochemicals and antioxidants in rosemary can be absorbed topically through the skin as well-massaging with rosemary oil is beneficial to both physical and mental well-being.

Rosemary is available in commercial teas, extracts, and essential oils. You can also use dried rosemary needles to make a homebrewed rosemary tea; just add 1 teaspoon of dried leaves to a cup of boiling water. Steep for 10 minutes, then strain. Use this infusion as a gargle for bad breath, or drink up to 3 cups a day to help improve digestion or clear congestion. Do not consume rosemary oil; it can cause stomach irritation and even poisoning. Rosemary may stimulate uterine contractions and menstruation, so pregnant women should not consume highly concentrated forms of this herb.

Rosemary, the essential oil has become important to us due to its various health benefits including its ability to stimulate hair growth, boost mental activity, relieve respiratory problems and reduce pain.

Today, many medicinal preparations contain rosemary oil. The various health benefits of rosemary oil are given below:

• Hair Care: Rosemary oil and rosemary teas are used extensively for hair care in shampoos and lotions. Regular use of rosemary oil helps in stimulating follicles, as a result of which, hair grow longer and stronger. It is also believed that rosemary oil slows down premature hair loss and graying of hair. Hence it is an excellent tonic for bald people. Rosemary essential oil is also beneficial for dry and flaky scalps. Regular massage of scalp with rosemary oil nourishes the scalp and removes dandruff. Further, it is often mixed with tea tree oil and basil oil to treat scalp problems. **Along w/food recipes & teas, I plan on using mine in an herbal hair rinse. I'll definitely post about it once I do.**

• Mouth Care: Rosemary essential oil is a disinfectant and is used as a mouth wash. It also helps in removing bad breadth.

• Skin Care: Rosemary essential oil is not used in skin care as extensively as it is used in hair care. Regular massage with the oil helps in toning your skin and removing dryness. It is also considered as a beauty aid for the face.

• Boost Mental Activity: Rosemary essential oil is an excellent brain and nerve tonic. It is often used by students during exam times as it increases concentration and helps in studying efficiently. It stimulates mental activity and is a good remedy for depression, mental fatigue and forgetfulness. Inhaling rosemary oil lifts your spirits immediately. Whenever your brain is tired, inhale rosemary oil to remove boredom and get fresh mental energy.

• Pain Relief: The ability of rosemary essential oil to relieve pain has resulted in its extensive usage in headaches, muscle pains, sore muscles, rheumatism and even arthritis. Massaging the part which is in pain with rosemary essential oil give relief from the pain. Vapor baths with rosemary oil is found to be effective for rheumatism.

• Aroma: Rosemary has a mesmerizing aroma and hence rosemary essential oil is an excellent inhalant. The oil is used in room fresheners, cosmetics, beauty aids, food, bath oil, candles and perfumes due to its aroma. The oil, when inhaled brings mental energy and also clears the respiratory tract. Many people spray mixture of rosemary essential oil and water to remove bad odor from room.

• Respiratory Problems: The benefits of rosemary essential oil in treating respiratory problems are unmatched. The scent of the oil gives relief from throat congestion. The oil is used in treating respiratory allergies, cold, sore throat and flu. Since rosemary oil is antiseptic it is effective for respiratory infections as well. The oil is antispasmodic and is used in bronchial asthma.

• Indigestion: Rosemary oil is often used for indigestion, flautulence and stomach cramps. Rosemary leaves are often added to meat dishes as it helps in digesting meat, especially lamb, beef and pork.

Other claimed health benefits of rosemary oil include its usage for disorders in menstrual cycle, menstrual cramps, peptic ulcer, urine flow, prostrate, gall bladder, intestine, liver, cataract, heart, sperm mobility, leukemia, kidney stones and associated pain. Research is also being carried out to study its potential in treating various types of caners including colon cancer, stomach cancer, breast cancer, and lung cancer.

Rosemary oil may, at times, have allergic reactions and hence it should be used only with prescription. Again, since rosemary oil is volatile in nature, the oil may cause vomiting and spasms. Hence it should not be consumed orally. It is suggested that rosemary essential oil should not be used by pregnant and breastfeeding or nursing women. Excessive dosage of the oil may lead to miscarriage or may affect the fetus.

Rosemary essential oil is used extensively in aromatherapy as it can be used in many preparations. The oil blends well with frankincense, lavender, clary sage, cedarwood, basil, thyme, citronella, lemongrass, elemi, geranium, chamomile, peppermint and cardamom.

This Is A Public Service Announcement!

Hi Beautifuls!

I hope your week is going well. I just had to pop in w/a PSA regarding the CW's show, "The Game". I personally love this show. It's funny and has excellent writing. Unfortunately, as a "black" or "minority" show, it tends to get the "red-headed stepchild" treatment. I don't want to see it wind up with the same fate as "Girlfriends" or "Half and Half", two of which were some great shows w/equally great writing and comedic timing. So I've included some tweets from twitter/cwthegame.com.

Please RT Watch the hour long season finale of The Game this Friday May 15th 8/7c on The CW Network.

I'm gonna be 100% honest with y'all If we don't watch and support the show this Friday in its hour long format.

Then this Friday will be the last new episode of The Game EVER and will become the series finale instead of the season finale.

The CW will be monitoring the finale 2 see how the audience responds. This episode & the ratings will play a big part if the show comes back

The CW decides the fate of The Game May 21st. We need to let them know we're not going down without a fight. Next week is Save The Game week.

Check out this preview for the hour long season finale of The Game this Friday May 18th on The CW http://cwtv.com/shows/the-game
