RAWphoriaLIVE Winnings Update!!

Happy Friday Beautifuls!

I hope that you've had a wonderful week! My week has been going well. Just the usual business. On yesterday, I got home to discover that my winnings form the RAWphoriaLive giveaway (hosted by Raw Epicurean) had arrived! Yay Me!! My gifts included (Cilantro-Lime flavor) Corntilla chips, (Tomato Basil flavor) Crackers, & RAWnola (granola) in nutty berry flavor.

My favorite is the RAWnola, which is basically unprocessed, uncooked granola. The nutty berry flavor is totally delish! It's naturally sweet with dates, agave nectar, and apples. And chocked full of natural goodness. It definitely quenched my sweet tooth. The Corntilla Chips I picked were the Cilantro Lime flavor. Oh my God!! The burst of flavor that I experienced when I put one in my mouth was outta this world! I think I'm gonna pair it with some fresh salsa. Yummy. The last item I received are the Crackers in tomato basil flavor. The aroma is wonderful & puts me in the mind of bread crisps that you would receive in an Italian or Mediterranean restaurant before a meal. The texture is something that I'll have to get used to because it's made with flax seeds which I hadn't ventured into yet. But the taste is still good.

All in all, these babies will be traveling with me to work and competitions. Once I've finished them, I'll definitely purchase some gRAWnola and more Corntilla Chips. If your interested, go check out RAWphoriaLive here. As there slogan says, "They are 100% raw. 100% vegan. 100% delicious." So true. These products are also wheat free, gluten free and yeast free.

Thanks again to Ingrid at Raw Epicurean for hosting this giveaway and giving everyone, including myself, an opportunity to win. As I've stated before, she has one of the most stylish and informative raw foods blog. You should check it out!

I hope that you have a wonderful weekend, with your beautiful self. I plan on it. I'm taking a beginners raw food class on this Saturday and I'm really hyped about it. That's my "do something for me". I'll definitely post on about it next week. Be sure to do something for yourself. And as always, do you.

By the way, what are your plans for the weekend?.....

Just Because

Hi Beautifuls,

If you don't already know, I am a fan of anime'. I'm not sure what the appeal of it is for me. Maybe it's because the storylines can consist of dynamic characters set in out of this world scenarios. Either way, I've heard of the above pictured character, Afro Samurai. (Am I the only one who thinks this ish is cool? Just wondering.) Here's the storyline behind it:

Afro Samurai (Academy Award ® nominee Samuel L. Jackson) avenged his father and found a life of peace. But the legendary master is forced back into the game by a beautiful and deadly woman from his past. The sparks of violence dropped along Afro’s bloody path now burn out of control – and nowhere are the flames of hatred more intense than in the eyes of Sio (Lucy Liu: Kill Bill). She won’t quit until Afro is schooled in the brutal lessons he dealt those who stood in his way.

There’s no such thing as final vengeance. The cycle of bloodshed spinning around the Number One Headband must roll on. Featuring the voice of Mark Hamill (Star Wars) and fresh production from The RZA (Wu-Tang Clan), the saga that began in the best-selling anime DVD of 2007 continues in AFRO SAMURAI: RESURRECTION.

Tried to embed the trailer but either it was not available or hidden so well that this non-programmer person would not know where to find it. Anyhoo, if you're interested, the movie (Which I believe is the 2nd one. If not, please correct me.) comes out on DVD next month. Ooh, my b'day month. I'll have to look into that!

At Home Dry Skin Remedies (Combating Winter Dryness 2.0)

Hi Beautifuls!

I was reading the new issue of Purely Delicious magazine and amongst all the great articles, I came across one in particular entitled, "Winter Wonderland. Rx for Winter Skin". So ya know I had to post and past the information along. There are some great products for your skin that you can shop for without spending any extra money. (And we all can use that right now.) All you have to do is walk into your own kitchen.

Honey - great at removing dead skin cells and stimulating the renewal and re-growth of skin tissue.

EVOO - cold-pressed olive oil can be used to soothe and soften damaged skin and hair. Double wammy!!

Coconut Oil - is super-moisturizing to the skin and protective in cold winds and dropping temps.

Avocado - is similar in quality to coconut oil and can also be used for deep conditioning for a dry, flaky scalp.

Raw Sugar - coarse raw sugar can be used as an exfoliating body scrub, and can be easily mixed with other ingredients.

Celtic Salt - or other quality coarse sea salt is an excellent exfoliator and healer of the skin.

Bananas - are wonderful on their own or combined with other ingredients to make a simple, super healing face mask.

Now, if you're like me you may be thinking, "Da heck do I make something with these ingredients?!" Well, here are a few recipes for you.

Avocado Deep Conditioner

1/2 mashed avocado
1/2 t. olive oil
Combine the ingredients and massage into your hair and scalp. Leave in for at least 15 minutes, then rinse well.

Rich Hand Cream
1 C. raw coconut oil
50 drops of essential oil
Combine the ingredients with a fork. Store in a dry, glass container and use as you would regular hand cream.

Replenishing Face Mask
1 part banana
1 part avocado
1 T. raw honey
Hand mash ingredients very well and apply to face. Allow to sit on skin 5-10 minutes or more. Then rinse well.

I can't wait to give these a try! If you're already using natural ingredients for at home hair or skin treatments or anything similiar to these recipes, please share.

Smooches Beautiful!

Happy Funky Friday!!

Beautifuls!, I was just perusing the net (still at work) and came across this smashing, fly doll!

Friday Foster®
With camera in hand, she enters the glamorous world of the jet-set...

Robert Tonner continues his tradition of being inspired by great pop-culture icons of the 20th century with his Friday Foster® Collection. Introduced in 1970, Friday Foster® was the first mainstream syndicated comic strip to feature an African-American woman. The strip told the story of Friday and her day to day world as a photo journalist. This also marks the first time Robert Tonner has explored the style of the 1970s in a primary fashion doll collection.

I just had to share!! I found this on the AngelicDreamz website!

Just wanted to wish you all a funky & fly Friday and weekend!!

Good Hair - The Documentary

Hi Beautifuls!

I was perusing my usual blogs favs and came across a post about this film on Afrobella's site. Comedian Chris Rock has done a documentary about black folks and hair which has peeked alot of folks (natural heads) interest, including my own. Here is a description of the film.

When Chris Rock’s daughter, Lola, came up to him crying and asked, “Daddy, how come I don’t have good hair?” the bewildered comic committed himself to search the ends of the earth and the depths of black culture to find out who had put that question into his little girl's head! Director Jeff Stilson’s camera followed the funnyman, and the result is Good Hair, a wonderfully insightful and entertaining, yet remarkably serious, documentary about African American hair culture. An exposé of comic proportions that only Chris Rock could pull off, Good Hair visits hair salons and styling battles, scientific laboratories, and Indian temples to explore the way black hairstyles impact the activities, pocketbooks, sexual relationships, and self-esteem of black people. Celebrities such as Ice-T, Kerry Washington, Nia Long, Paul Mooney, Raven Symoné, Maya Angelou, and Reverend Al Sharpton all candidly offer their stories and observations to Rock while he struggles with the task of figuring out how to respond to his daughter’s question. What he discovers is that black hair is a big business that doesn’t always benefit the black community and little Lola’s question might well be bigger than his ability to convince her that the stuff on top of her head is nowhere near as important as what is inside.

In all honesty, I wonder if he has done this topic justice. (This is how I feel about it.) I do want to see the film and I do like Chris Rock, however, as he is a comedian I'm a bit concerned about his delivery on this topic. Part of me wonders if he talked to some non-celebrity "natural heads". Just curious. If anyone has seen this, please share your opinion/review on this film.

Healthy Eating Update

Good Morning Beautifuls!

I just had to share. I have made an observation about my health and it's relation to what I eat. Normally, by this time of year, I am sick with a sinus and/or upper respiratory infection and on some type of antibiotic. Last Spring, I got to thinking that maybe this is due to my eating habits. That after "holiday binging" from Thanksgiving to Christmas to New Years on cooked foods rich in saturated fats, sugar and God knows what else, my body would become open and prone to illness. Well, given my decision to eat healthier, I decided to observe my body to see if any type illness would hit me and low and behold... I'm not ill with any type infection or on any type of antibiotics. Keep in mind, I'm not 100% raw nor am I trying to be. I'm not vegan but I've drastically cut down on my meat intake to about 15% of my diet. I still eat cooked foods but not like I use to. (Hell, it's too cold not to!) I would say that my diet is maybe 40% raw.

My conclusion is that it is definitely beneficial to eat healthier. I will continue to increase my raw food intake to 75% unless I'm moved to go further. I'll continue to decrease my meat intake to 5% or less unless moved to go further. I've already signed up for a Raw Foods Beginner's course at the end of this month. (And yes, I will be posting about it.) And I'm definitely back on my workout game.

What about you? What are you doing to better your body? And what improvements have you seen because of your changes?...

Some Benefits of Castor Oil

I just had to share some information on Castor Oil. I use it to moisturize my body as soon as I get out of the shower. So far, I've been mixing it with Coconut Oil and applying it to my damp skin. I’m happy to say that it’s been working wonders. My dry patches have just about totally clear. I've also been adding a little of it to my hair for sealing since this Winter weather is so brisk. Normally, Castor Oil is too heavy for my hair but with the cold weather it has been working for me. I’ll continue to use it during this season until warmer weather comes.
So here a little FYI regarding this inexpensive household oil.

Topical Treatments
Many people do not know of castor oil as a topical ointment, but it has been medically used to treat multiple conditions. First, wrapping an infection with a castor oil soaked bandage or cotton ball overnight can remove swelling and infection. It also works excellently on ringworm, inflammation, and even sun burns. This is because ricinoleic acid in castor oil prevents the growth of bacteria, yeast, and viruses. The best way to use this as a topical cream is to presoak the infected area with Epsom salt to soften the skin. Then wrap the area with a cotton cloth soaked in castor oil.

As a topical treatment, castor oil is also widely used for skin health and beauty. Massaging the body with castor oil prior to a bath once a week will help the skin retain its natural healing properties as well as stimulate the body’s muscles and internal organs. Rubbing castor oil on hands and feet at night will help maintain healthy and soft skin, as well as reduce callous and dry skin . Most lotions include castor oil and other ingredients, such as coconut oil and aloe. This benefits of castor oil for skin beauty is something many people are already doing but not aware that they are actually using castor oil!

Castor Oil Packs
Castor oil packs soaked through the skin improve the body’s ability to assimilate nutrients, eliminate toxins, and stimulate circulation. To make castor oil packs, one needs undyed cotton flannel, castor oil, a container, a plastic bag, and a hot water bottle or heating pad. All of these items can be purchased from any medical supply store without a prescription, but it is also important to consult a physician before using this remedy. Also, castor oil stains clothes, so be sure to use old clothes and an old blanket before using castor oil cold packs.

Industrially, it is one of the widest used renewable resources. Primarily, its health properties stimulate the body, reduce pain, and reduce infection. The benefits of castor oil are related to inflammation, digestion, and circulation. While there are many health benefits of castor oil, there is also a caution that when not properly used it can cause medical problems and in rare cases even death. Please remember to consult a physician before using any homeopathic remedy .

Remembering Dr. King..

Martin Luther King, Jr., (January 15, 1929-April 4, 1968) was born Michael Luther King, Jr., but later had his name changed to Martin. Martin Luther attended segregated public schools in Georgia, graduating from high school at the age of fifteen; he received the B. A. degree in 1948 from Morehouse College, a distinguished Negro institution of Atlanta from which both his father and grandfather had graduated. After three years of theological study at Crozer Theological Seminary in Pennsylvania where he was elected president of a predominantly white senior class, he was awarded the B.D. in 1951. With a fellowship won at Crozer, he enrolled in graduate studies at Boston University, completing his residence for the doctorate in 1953 and receiving the degree in 1955. In Boston he met and married Coretta Scott, a young woman of uncommon intellectual and artistic attainments. Two sons and two daughters were born into the family.

In 1954, Martin Luther King accepted the pastorale of the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama. Always a strong worker for civil rights for members of his race, King was, by this time, a member of the executive committee of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, the leading organization of its kind in the nation. He was ready, then, early in December, 1955, to accept the leadership of the first great Negro nonviolent demonstration of contemporary times in the United States, the bus boycott described by Gunnar Jahn in his presentation speech in honor of the laureate. The boycott lasted 382 days. On December 21, 1956, after the Supreme Court of the United States had declared unconstitutional the laws requiring segregation on buses, Negroes and whites rode the buses as equals. During these days of boycott, King was arrested, his home was bombed, he was subjected to personal abuse, but at the same time he emerged as a Negro leader of the first rank.

In 1957 he was elected president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, an organization formed to provide new leadership for the now burgeoning civil rights movement. The ideals for this organization he took from Christianity; its operational techniques from Gandhi. In the eleven-year period between 1957 and 1968, King traveled over six million miles and spoke over twenty-five hundred times, appearing wherever there was injustice, protest, and action; and meanwhile he wrote five books as well as numerous articles. In these years, he led a massive protest in Birmingham, Alabama, that caught the attention of the entire world, providing what he called a coalition of conscience. and inspiring his "Letter from a Birmingham Jail", a manifesto of the Negro revolution; he planned the drives in Alabama for the registration of Negroes as voters; he directed the peaceful march on Washington, D.C., of 250,000 people to whom he delivered his address, "l Have a Dream", he conferred with President John F. Kennedy and campaigned for President Lyndon B. Johnson; he was arrested upwards of twenty times and assaulted at least four times; he was awarded five honorary degrees; was named Man of the Year by Time magazine in 1963; and became not only the symbolic leader of American blacks but also a world figure.

At the age of thirty-five, Martin Luther King, Jr., was the youngest man to have received the Nobel Peace Prize. When notified of his selection, he announced that he would turn over the prize money of $54,123 to the furtherance of the civil rights movement.

On the evening of April 4, 1968, while standing on the balcony of his motel room in Memphis, Tennessee, where he was to lead a protest march in sympathy with striking garbage workers of that city, he was assassinated.

I was watching VH-1 Soul and saw this old video. Do you all remember this and all the groups and artists in it?.....

Is Jack Frost Nipping At Your Hair...

Good Morning Beautifuls!

I hope that all is well in your world. I'm doing well although a bit cold. Our temps. today will remain in around 30 degrees. Although our saving grace is that the wonderful sun is out, these type of temps are sure to put a strain on our tresses. This week I've been bunning my hair since I discovered that I am now able to do a bun. Yay me!! However, I was a bit concerned about my hair laying down so my method of choice has been to condition/moisturize/and moisturize some more. I ponytail my hair while in the shower since I detangle there anyway.

While soaking wet,I put a heavy leave-in(s) on it like Sheamoisture Shea Butter Leave-in on top of left in conditioner from the wash. For added protection, I add some Qhemet Heavy Cream or Castor Oil. Then I cover my head with a scarf (maybe a couple) for the night. I put my ponytail in a about 5 or 6 twists and put rod rollers on the end. And in all honesty, in the morning I ride into work with a cute hate over all this. Once I get to the bathroom, I remove everything and finger comb the ponytail hair out and tuck it into a bun. Topping it off w/a nice scrunchie. (By the way, Ulta has some really nice hair accessories.) This is my modified version of Curlynikki's bun video. I don't have all the hair she has but definitely enough to do a pony and bun so it is doable.

I also want to share with you Sage Vivant's post on Cold Weather Hair Care. She has some very good and useful information about ingredients to stay away from and embrace in cold, low-humidity weather.

What are you doing to protect your hair this Winter?.....

I Swear I'm Not a Conspiracy Theorist!

Good Morning Beautifuls!

I hope that all is well in your world! I just had to share some information with you. I really do not consider myself a conspiracy theorist but doggonit when I just think about stuff (i.e. our standard American diet, the pharmaceutical/health industry, etc.), things become pretty obvious to me. I found a link to this article on Welikeitraw blog. So I just had to share this article with you.

FDA scientists complain to Obama of 'corruption'
By RICARDO ALONSO-ZALDIVAR – 3 days ago

WASHINGTON (AP) — In an unusually blunt letter, a group of federal scientists is complaining to the Obama transition team of widespread managerial misconduct in a division of the Food and Drug Administration.

"The purpose of this letter is to inform you that the scientific review process for medical devices at the FDA has been corrupted and distorted by current FDA managers, thereby placing the American people at risk," said the letter, dated Wednesday and written on the agency's Center for Devices and Radiological Health letterhead.

The center is responsible for medical devices ranging from stents and breast implants to MRIs and other imaging machinery. The concerns of the nine scientists who wrote to the transition team echo some of the complaints from the FDA's drug review division a few years ago during the safety debacle involving the painkiller Vioxx.

The FDA declined to publicly respond to the letter, but said it is working to address the concerns.

In their letter the FDA dissidents alleged that agency managers use intimidation to squelch scientific debate, leading to the approval of medical devices whose effectiveness is questionable and which may not be entirely safe.

"Managers with incompatible, discordant and irrelevant scientific and clinical expertise in devices...have ignored serious safety and effectiveness concerns of FDA experts," the letter said. "Managers have ordered, intimidated and coerced FDA experts to modify scientific evaluations, conclusions and recommendations in violation of the laws, rules and regulations, and to accept clinical and technical data that is not scientifically valid."

A copy of the letter, with the names of the scientists redacted, was provided to The Associated Press by a congressional official.

"Currently, there is an atmosphere at FDA in which the honest employee fears the dishonest employee, and not the other way around," the scientists wrote.

FDA spokeswoman Judy Leon said in response: "We have been working very closely with members of the transition team and any concerns or questions they have on any issue, we will address directly with the team. Separately, the agency is actively engaged in a process to explore the staff members' concerns and take appropriate action."

Senior Democratic and Republican lawmakers are urging Obama to appoint a commissioner who will shake up the FDA and restore the confidence of its working-level scientists and medical experts. But industry officials fear that approval of new drugs and devices could be delayed by endless scientific disputes — which is the agency's reputation.

The FDA dissidents have previously taken their concerns to Congress and found support from lawmakers in the House.

In the letter the group singled out mammography computer-aided detection devices as an example of a technology that should not have gone forward. The devices were supposed to improve breast cancer detection, but instead studies showed they were associated with false alarms that led to unnecessary breast biopsies.

Since 2006, FDA experts have recommended five times against approving the devices without better clinical evidence, the letter said. In March of last year, a panel of outside advisers supported some of the concerns of the FDA's in-house scientists. Nonetheless, FDA managers overruled the objections and ordered approval.

Top FDA managers "committed the most outrageous misconduct by ordering, coercing and intimidating FDA physicians and scientists to recommend approval, and then retaliating when the physicians and scientists refused to go along," the letter said.

A spokeswoman said the Obama transition team had no comment
.

And this is one of the reasons why I've chosen to seek to live more "natural".
Ummhmm....

THINK ON THESE THINGS

Happy Friday Beautifuls!

I hope that all is well in your world. I just wanted to share some positivity for this Friday. In conversation with a few people I keep hearing the terms "positive thinking" and "positive affirmations". I'm glad that I kept hearing this because I was beginning to feel a bit funky so these conversations definitely helped to snap me out of it. Although these phrases and those like them are nothing new I do believe it is always current and necessary to our well-being. So I decided to share an excerpt from Philip McCluskey's blog LovingRaw. I just love his attitude!

Faith
Trusting in the Universe has been a wonderful learning process for me. Leaning that I manifest the world around me. Learning there is no such thing as coincidence. Learning that I am a co-creator, not a victim. Learning that the responsibility is all mine. Learning that the universe only has good things for me. Learning to be still, and know that everything is perfect.

The Best
I came to find that living a life with the attitude of having the “The Best Day Ever,” everyday, presented more than I could ever hope or dream for. I decided not to put my future in a box, but rather be completely open to whatever was to come. Expecting the best in every situation and being in a space of gratitude no matter what was gifted to me.

Tools
Here are a couple tools I found that helped me along the way:

1. Affirmations. Most people have a terrible day because subconsciously they don’t feel that they deserve anything good in life, usually do to a lack of self-love. You can reverse that by affirming it to yourself in the mirror daily. I dare you. Do it until you actually believe yourself, or until you crack up laughing.

2. Creating Your Day. Create your day by writing down exactly how you want your day to go. It is quite simple, and should take less than 5 or 10 minutes. Don’t be skimpy on the details either. If you are having a problem with a co-worker, write down how you would like them to act towards you, seeing that person as cordial and pleasant. Whatever the situation, see it in your mind and write it down.

3. Visualization. Take 30 minutes once or more a week and picture your future, the way you want it to be. Write your own movie where you get to be the star. Your goal may be to lose 40 pounds, and go to work in a new tailored pinstripe suit. If that is the case, picture yourself as that person in your minds eye, trim, strong, muscular, confidant, and looking amazing in your new suit. Picture what it feels like when you walk around and interact with people. Feel the emotion of the moment. The emotion is what sets it into action.

So whether you struggle with viewing yourself from the perspective of the past…

Or find yourself worrying about your purpose, or who you will be in the future…

Or just plain tired of having days that are “less than the best ever…”

Trust in the Universe.

Take steps to create change.

And smile, because you are loved.

*taken from Philip McCluskey’s blog post, Trusting in the Universe.

I also love gettogetha's beautiful and inspiring quote:
"You are not your past, you are your possibilities".

Lovelies.. take what you can from this and then marinate on it.
Have a wonderful weekend and remember "Do You".

Peace....

Just So You Know...

Hi Beautifuls!

Just wanted to drop in and say "Hello". Please pardon my slack in blogging but my daughter is in competition season (Competitive Cheerleading) and that along w/recovering from the holiday schedule has left me a bit drained. Honestly, my mind is hardly focused on anything outside of this Sundays competition (their first one for this season). Not to say that I haven't thought about blogging but between her teams preparation, her school project (yes, already), my 9-to-5 and my short amount of sleep (which I admit is no one's fault but my own) I have been left with little energy.

I hope to recover from this by next week. So please bear with me and my schedule.
I'll be back in the groove of things soon.

Much Love...

Combating Winter Dryness (revisited)

Hi Beautifuls!

I just wanted to update you on my fight with winter dryness. Remember my previous post on this battle. Well, I have been combining my castor oil with e.v. coconut oil and applying it to my still damp skin, immediately after I get out of the shower. After this, I apply my lotion and allow myself to air dry as much as possible.

I must say that this has been working for me. The dry patchiness that I had going on has almost disappeared. And let tell you, it was pretty bad. I simply cannot say enough about these two products. I've posted about Coconut Oil but I'm gonna have to speak on Castor oil real soon.

If you're struggling w/keeping your skin moisturized you may want to try combining your products and applying them to moist skin, like we tend to do for our hair. Same method just different landscape.
